A green gift for Hampden Road

20 evergreen ash trees have just been planted on a grey suburban section of Hampden Road. It is hoped that over the next few years the new trees will transform this street into a soft, green and welcoming oasis.

The planting is one of the largest street plantings the City of Hobart has carried out in more than a decade and was made possible through the incredible generosity of a Hobart philanthropist.

The work saw crews bring in diggers and a vac truck to prepare the soil underneath the street. The preparatory work is undertaken to ensure that there is enough space for the roots of the young trees to grow for years to come and it is also an essential step that helps to prevent any issues to underground services, roads and buildings as the roots begin to mature.

The planting was completed just days ahead of National Tree Day on Sunday, July 28, and will be a lasting legacy for years to come.

For those interested in seeing these young trees and watching them grow, you can find them on the section of Hampden Road near the Repatriation Hospital, which is located off Davey Street.

Trees planted along streets, in city parks and even in people’s gardens are essential to providing us with a healthy environment. They provide cleaner air, helping to filter out impurities from the air, keep the city cool in summer and improve people’s physical and mental health.

The gift of 20 street trees from a private philanthropist is both an inspiration and a call-to-action for others to help increase Hobart’s street tree canopy and create a greener, more climate resilient city.
